It's Our 1st Birthday and Giving Tuesday
Join us in celebrating our 1st Birthday by making a donation in support of the fight for the freedom to read in Texas!
Today, December 3, 2024 marks the first birthday of Texas Freedom to Read Project- and perhaps serendipitously -Giving Tuesday. Texas Freedom to Read Project is a Texas parent-founded, parent-led, volunteer-run 501c3 nonprofit.
DONATE TO MAKE A DIFFERNCE
A donation today, makes a difference in the fight for the freedom to read in Texas tomorrow.
To be honest, it’s a little bittersweet to “celebrate” our birthday. We wish we didn’t need to exist- and are also glad that we do.
Texas Freedom to Read Project was born out of a desperate need to organize parents- and community members- after the fallout of the last Texas legislative session.
We watched as librarians, students, authors, youth and 1A advocates, and a few dedicated parents tried to combat the wave of bad censorship bills being proposed (and passed) by the Texas state legislature.
Laney, Anne and Frank looked around for a Texas version of a parent-led group like Florida Freedom to Read Project, who could lead parents and community members in the kind of freedom to read advocacy being done by dedicated leaders - like FReadom Fighters of Texas, Students Engaged in Advancing Texas, the ACLU of Texas, Children's Defense Fund of Texas, Texas Freedom Network and IDRA- before we eventually looked at each other and realized the parent-led group we knew Texas needed, could be us.
Those groups (named above), plus EveryLibrary, PEN America, National Coalition Against Censorship, Dr. Tasslyn Magnusson, Kelly Jensen and so many others who we will inevitably fail to name here- have been the greatest cheerleaders, mentors and supporters. These organizations and individuals are all equally deserving of your attention and support.
It’s been a wild, hard year filled with a lot of laughter, so many Zoom calls, and some tears.
2025 promises to be another uphill climb for those individuals and organizations fighting for the freedom to read in Texas.
We hope you’ll continue to support us, encourage us, and join Texas Freedom to Read Project as we move into year 2!
THANK YOU!
Sincerely,
Laney, Frank & Anne
