Call and Email Your Texas Senator to Oppose SB13 Before It's Too Late!
Texas K-16 Senate Education Committee voted SB13 out of committee last week. The Lieutenant Governor's priority Book Ban Bill is expected to go before the full senate for a vote as soon as this week.
Last week, the Texas Senate K-16 Education Committee voted 10-1 (Senator José Menéndez was the lone dissenting vote) to send SB13 to the full Senate for a vote.
Senate Bill 13- which is Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's priority bill to "guard against inappropriate books in public schools" is listed on the Regular Order of Business and likely to be taken up for a vote by the full Texas senate very soon.
Act now, before it's too late.
According to analysis by Carolyn Foote, of Texas FReadom Fighters, 200 people provided written, oral or registered opposition to SB13 during the February 27 committee meeting where SB13 was discussed. While only 33 witnesses wrote, spoke or registered in support of the bill.
Texans value the freedom to read, and Texas parents trust librarians and educators to work with us to ensure our children maintain access to expansive, age relevant public school library collections that meet our children's individual needs and interests. We must continue to urge our representatives to vote "no" on SB13 when it comes to the Senate floor for a full vote.
Call Your Texas (District) Senator
Call your Texas senator (not Cruz or Cornyn) and ask them to oppose SB13. Find out who represents your district, here.
Here's a sample script you can use and adapt for your own needs:
"Hi, my name is (first name) and I'm calling in regards to SB13, the Library Advisory Committee bill. As a (parent/Texan/voter) and library supporter, I am asking you to oppose this bill because it would put the power into the hands of a few parents and not elected officials. I would like my district to be more focused on improving math and reading scores instead of worrying about controlling library books. Also, Texas has already passed one bill that is in place to do that so we don't need another one. Please let the Senator know my concerns. Thank you."
